Zomato-Blinkit sets record, delivers 7.5 million orders on December 31

Eternal founder Deepinder Goyal said that food delivery platform Zomato and quick commerce firm BlinkIt together recorded 7.5 million orders on New Year's Eve on Wednesday. This means that the December 31st strike by gig workers had no impact.

Food delivery platform Zomato and quick commerce firm BlinkIt delivered a record 7.5 million orders on Wednesday, New Year's Eve. Deepinder Goyal, founder of the platform's parent company, Eternal, said the gig workers' strike call had no impact on them.

He wrote in a post on X that with the help of local police, a handful of miscreants were kept under control, allowing over 4.5 million delivery partners on both platforms to deliver over 7.5 million orders (the highest ever) to over 6.3 million customers throughout the day.

Work done without incentive

Goyal further said that all this was possible without any extra incentives for delivery partners. New Year's Eve offers higher incentives than usual, and December 31st was no different from last New Year's Eve.

Zomato was paying delivery partners around ₹120-₹150 per order on December 31st. Zomato and Blinkit delivered at a record pace yesterday, unaffected by the strike calls heard over the past few days.

The cooperation of local law enforcement agencies helped control the handful of miscreants, allowing over 4.5 lakh delivery partners in both regions to continue their work smoothly.

Labor unions claim that around 210,000 gig workers across the country went on strike on New Year's Eve. A section of riders, led by the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, struck on December 25 and 31, the busiest days of the year for food delivery and quick commerce companies.

These companies have seen record orders on New Year's Eve for the past two years. They set up war rooms on December 31 to ensure their systems could handle the increased load.

What were the demands of gig workers?

Unions called for a strike demanding better wages, safety, and social security benefits. They also demanded a ban on 10-minute deliveries, arguing that this puts riders' lives at risk as they rush to complete deliveries on time.

In his post on X, Goyal thanked the delivery riders who came on December 31st and said that if a system were fundamentally unjust, it would not be able to consistently attract and retain so many people who choose to work in it.

He further stated that the gig economy is one of the largest engines of organized employment generation in India, and its true impact will grow over time as the children of delivery partners, supported by stable incomes and education, join the workforce and contribute to transforming our country on a massive scale.
