The Startup India mission is a success, with the government's efforts crossing the 2 lakh mark
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the number of government-recognized startups in India has surpassed 200,00. This year, a record 44,000 new startups were added, with a significant share coming from women entrepreneurs.
With just over two weeks left before the end of the year, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday highlighted the significant progress made in India's startup journey.
He stated that India now has over 200,000 government-recognized startups. This year alone, over 44,000 new startups have been recognized, the highest number in a single year since the Startup India initiative began.
Piyush Goyal, in a post on the social media platform X, said that the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship is driving growth, opportunity, and prosperity in the country.
He wrote, "A remarkable achievement before we close out 2025! India is now home to over 200,000 government-recognized startups. This year, more than 44,000 startups were recognized, the highest number since the StartupIndia initiative."
He further stated that what makes this achievement even more special is that approximately 48% of startups have at least one female director or partner.
These startups have also directly employed over 2.1 million people. Goyal added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a self-reliant and developed India has received strong support from the country's young entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors.
Government schemes did wonders
The Union Minister explained that this success was achieved through several government initiatives. Under the Fund of Funds for Startups scheme, over ₹25,320 crore has been invested in over 1,350 startups through alternative investment funds.
The Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups has provided over ₹775 crore in support. Under the Startup India Seed Fund scheme, incubators have approved over ₹585 crore in funding to over 3,200 startups.
He also reported that more than 16,400 new patent applications have been filed by startups. Piyush Goyal said that more than 34,800 recognized startups have been integrated into the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) to provide them with a level playing field and enable them to participate in government procurement.
He said that this spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship will continue to drive the country forward as we enter the new year.
Schemes under Startup India
Under the Startup India initiative, the government is running three major schemes: Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS). These schemes aim to support startups across sectors at different stages of their business.
The Fund of Funds for Startups scheme aims to promote venture capital investments. It is administered by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), which provides capital to SEBI-registered alternative investment funds.
These funds then invest in startups. As of October 31, 2025, these funds have invested approximately ₹2,838.9 crore in 154 women-led startups.
