Jolla Phone with replaceable battery launched, will run on Linux Sailfish OS

The Jolla Phone runs on Linux Sailfish OS and is notable for its 5,500mAh replaceable battery. The phone is currently available for pre-order, and pricing has also been revealed.

Finnish technology company Jolla has launched its new smartphone, the Jolla Phone, which focuses on privacy and long-term software support. The phone is positioned as an alternative to Android and iOS and runs on Sailfish OS 5, a Linux-based operating system. 

The company has initially made it available in Europe, where pre-orders are available. The phone has generated considerable buzz due to its price, specifications, and unique features.

Price and availability

The Jolla Phone is currently available for pre-order through the company's website, requiring a refundable advance of EUR 99, or approximately Rs 10,400. 

The phone's final price has been set at EUR 499, or approximately Rs 52,400, while the retail price is expected to be between EUR 599 and 699, or approximately Rs 62,900 and Rs 73,400. 

The phone will be sold in the European Union, UK, Norway, and Switzerland, with deliveries beginning in the first half of 2026. 

The company states that production will begin only after receiving 2,000 confirmed orders, a target that has currently been 125% achieved. The phone may also be launched in India.

Jolla Phone: Specifications

The Jolla Phone has been launched with a 6.36-inch full-HD AMOLED display, protected by Gorilla Glass. The phone runs on Sailfish OS 5, a Linux-based system, and also supports Android apps. 

The company claims at least five years of software updates. This phone is privacy-focused, and user data is only used with user permission. Additionally, the back cover is user-replaceable.

Jolla Phone: Chipset and performance

The phone is powered by a MediaTek 5G chipset, the exact details of which are yet to be revealed. It comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which can be expanded up to 2TB via a microSD card. 

The device features 5G/4G connectivity, along with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and global roaming support. The phone also includes a power-key fingerprint sensor, an RGB notification LED, and a hardware-based privacy switch.

Camera and battery

The Jolla Phone features a 50MP primary wide-angle camera and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera. There's a wide-angle selfie camera on the front, though the company hasn't shared its megapixel count. 

The phone's most notable feature is its 5,500mAh replaceable battery, which users can replace themselves if needed. Charging speeds are not yet available, but the company claims it's a great option for long-term use.
